Hi guys

A few days of radio silence! My mobile has all but completely shit itself (which was awesome when I broke down on the side of the freeway earlier this week...not) and my laptop has followed suit. The laptop I can forgive, as it has been ridden hard since it came into my world in 2005. But the phone can suck my balls, its only 12 months old!!! It has apparently reached its teen years (in mobile time) and is rebelliously hiding my texts, switching off in the middle of conversations, and refusing to connect phone calls at random. I actually threw it after spending over an hour trying to respond to texts from [livejournal.com profile] annella and [livejournal.com profile] eireinn the other day. I need to get a new phone right now, this is too ridiculous!

Also being given the chance to suck on my balls, is the asshole who commented anonymously and then deleted, who let me know that all this bushfire stuff is BO-RING, and that it’s a shame that after months and months and even years of virtual silence and no fanfic from me, that I have come back into activity only to disappoint people who have kept me on their flist in the hopes that I’ll actually produce something they give a shit about. Well. I guess you might feel a bit differently if you were in our shoes, and the sky was orange even kilometres away from the firefront, like it is today, and the air is full of smoke, like it is today, and every night you turn on the news to hear about more people dead, more homes and wildlife lost, and no end in sight. Or maybe you wouldn’t, because clearly you are a total fuckwit and a cunt to boot.

Because I’m at work with limited time to spare, that’s all I’m gonna say about that.

[livejournal.com profile] sansa1970 is offering fic for donations – find out more here.

[livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier is doing the same - – find out more here.

[livejournal.com profile] romaine24 has some info here about companies doing donation matching.

[livejournal.com profile] aoifene is making hand – made jewellery in exchange for donations, which you can find out more about right here.

There is more of this sort of stuff all over my flist, and I just don’t know what anyone could ever say to thank you guys. I know I’m doing a poor job of even a basic thank you, because there is so much support out there that I’m missing all the posts! I also really really want to thank [livejournal.com profile] frances_veritas, who was one on the first of my flisters to spread the word about this, and I felt like a huge asshole when I realised I forgot to thank you in my last post! ILUBB ♥

Guys, I can’t even tell you how awesome you guys are. I guess I’ll just have to try though! Not awesome are both my mobile phone and laptop, which have been working against me all day to prevent me communicating with bloody anybody. I’ve been trying to post this post since about 6pm, and it’s just gone 12.55am here!

So many people have gotten involved in some way or another to help, and I just want to thank you so much – even if it’s just a kind word or a thought, we need it right now and we gratefully accept it. Not everyone is in a position to make a donation, but even just spreading the word is of great help. You’re all in good company as well - help has been pouring in from around the globe.

The death toll has exceeded 180 today. I have one mate who hasn’t checked in again after assuring me she was okay on Sunday, but in better news my brother heard from a mate today who lost her home and all her livestock in Wandong. She’d been on holiday in Queensland that weekend and so when the fires destroyed her home and street, the house was totally empty…except for her dog in the yard. They thought the dog was well and truly a casualty, but she called back later this afternoon to say they had miraculously found the dog – it’s all she has left, other than a suitcase of holiday clothes. My uncle’s home is about 20 minutes away from one of the fires, but thankfully it does not appear to be moving any closer to their property. Mum has made me promise not to say anything about it to my grandmother, so that she doesn’t worry herself sick about it.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] thysanotus has posted some striking photographs from around the affected areas. It's both terrible and breathtaking at the same time.

My uni has opened up student accommodation at our Bundoora, Bendigo and Beechworth campuses, and there are already people coming in for refuge. All kinds of collections are being taken up all over the place, and lots of people I know are donating blood.

[livejournal.com profile] meredyth_13 has been working her ARSE off in consultation with an organisation called Triple R Equine Welfare Inc (TREW) to find solutions and provide support specifically for horses during this whole episode. As of her email of a few hours ago, the post I was GOING to make here is now out of date! But if you would still like to provide any support to TREW, please visit their website. Mere, you’re fucking awesome hun. I wish I could have done more to help you out. Rest assured I have called my laptop a number of offensive things in retribution for this rebellion.

[livejournal.com profile] astarael02 (and family) has literally moved me to tears by donating more than £100 to the Australian Red Cross. Thank you so much, that is amazingly generous *enormous hugs*

[livejournal.com profile] taradiane, [livejournal.com profile] anthimaeria, [livejournal.com profile] ruronihime, [livejournal.com profile] piratesmile331 have all donated and/or spread the word about where donations can be made. I just can’t thank you guys enough or express how amazing it is that people from all over are getting involved. There is so much generosity coming from so much tragedy. I love you guys!

[livejournal.com profile] jamie2109 has been doing some hard yards during all this, working directly with families and individuals who have been devastated by these fires. So many people needing a shoulder to cry on, and that shoulder is [livejournal.com profile] jamie2109’s right now. Hang in there hun.

[livejournal.com profile] winchesterxgirl’s brother is a fire-fighter who is currently working on the fire front in Healsville. J, he’s nothing short of a hero and you should be very proud. I’m keeping him in my thoughts and hope he returns safe *hugs*

It was raining here an hour ago, and I just hope there's more of that to come.

Thanks to everyone who has commented, it's amazingly comforting. And thank you as well to those of you who have texted me over the last few days to check if I was okay! That was awesome of you, and gave me a little warm fuzzy despite everything to know that you care ♥ I know some of you may have other Aussie's on your flist, but for some of you I might be the only one. It's depressing to see so many sad posts, but I think all we Aussies are just so devastated at the moment, we all need to talk about it to try and come to terms with the complete horror of it all.

I don't live in an area which is currently under threat - however, I'm not awfully far from it, and I do live in an area which has historically suffered from summer grassfires in our valley, pretty much all of which are deliberately lit. Everyone here is on edge, waiting for some fucking asshole to do it. It's SO DRY here - everything is brown and it wouldn't take much. Fires started at Wilson's Prom from lightning strikes during the storm.

Whittlesea is just a short trip up the road from work, and going to and from work today there were fire trucks and ambo's racing up the freeway, presumably to those areas. Our senior academic staff had been headed up to Beechworth for a staff retreat this weekend and were thankfully stopped at the last minute. I heard a rumour around campus today that one of the buildings at our Bendigo campus was lost in the fires, and there are a number of staff living in the surrounding areas which have not yet been accounted for. Students due to start courses and enrol this week have been calling to say they've been evacuated, or have just left out of fear. It's a total nightmare.

Like I said last post, our Christmas holiday's were often spent in Marysville - there's virtually nothing left there. According to this report, police have actually had to block the roads to prevent people entering the town, because there are literally bodies lying in the street. I particularly remember a very hot Christmas there in 1994, twelve of us staying in Rose Cottage, going to mass in the little old church, and for some reason, I particularly remember buying Bulla raspberry yoghurt and a pack of pink scented candles at a little grocer/milk bar. I can't wrap my head around the fact that somewhere I've been is just gone. My girlfriend in Kilmore said they watched the fires burn around them all night Saturday, and they were lucky to still have their home when many of their friends and neighbours lost them. I just can't believe it.

The latest death toll is over 130.

Many people on my flist have posted this information, but I've specifically copied the following from [livejournal.com profile] huggenkiss and [livejournal.com profile] meredyth_13:

(from [livejournal.com profile] meredyth_13)

"While there are already major services in place to support the human casualties, and even our wildlife rescue groups are visible and have networks in place, the emergency evacuation and housing of large animals like horses is problematic, especially when they may end up in less than ideal temporary housing and many are injured or stressed. Feed, medical supplies and equipment are vital. As I find out more about the relief support effort, I will be posting information on how people can help. This is something very close to my heart, as it the plight of our wildlife and domestic animals injured and displaced by this horrific week.

In the meantime, if you want to assist the services with a donation of any kind, the links are:

Guys, if you pray - please pray for everyone here.

ETA: More from [livejournal.com profile] meredyth_13:

"Thank you to everyone who has offered to help spread the word on this for me. I am now assisting the Triple R Equine Welfare Inc, or TREW, who are the lead Crisis Relief organisation providing support for the many hundreds of people who are attempting to save their horses and other large animals during this bushfire crisis.

While both the human and wildlife aspects get a lot of attention, very little is being told about the countless struggles to save injured and evacuated livestock, especially horses. TREW are actively networking between those in need, and those who can provide assistance.

I am now working with them on a range of projects including finding FEED, TRANSPORT and EMERGENCY HOUSING for these animals, both in the short term, and longer, as this situation is not going to go away when the fires are eventually out. Entire properties have been razed to the ground, and without feed, shelter or fences, it will be impossible to relocate any time soon.

But these things don't always come cheap, especially medical supplies and transportation of bulk feed.

I don't ask for much from my network here, but if you can, please spare a few dollars to help us help those who are truly desperate. Moving and relocating a large animal, or several, especially injured or stressed animals, is a difficult and traumatic experience, especially when the rest of your world is falling apart.

TREW are a wholly voluntary organisation with very little monetary reserve. They are a registered Not for Profit organisation and donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Please donate to

http://triplerequinewelfare.org/main/page_resources_crisis_network.html

Go to the BOTTOM of the page and click on the DONATE link.

Every dollar will help.

And if you can, please spread the word. "

Lots and lots of fires burning around my state right now, and other parts of Australia. I'm stressing about not hearing back from friends who live in some of the affected areas, Mum just walked in after church and said that relatives of some of the congregants had lost their homes in Kinglake. It's absolutely horrible, and there are at least 25 people dead at last count. I've heard that one town (Marysville) is all but wiped off the map. We used to holiday there at Christmas when I was a kid.

All the Aussie's on my flist are posting about the heatwave and the fires, and floods in one part of the country, and then I see other posts about fandom wank and whining, and I just feel like saying DO YOU KNOW PEOPLE ARE BURNING TO DEATH HERE AND YOU'RE GETTTING BUTTHURT ABOUT A FUCKING TV SHOW???? I'm not, of course, because that would be totally unfair, but its still a very weird thing to read people going about their daily lives, when we're all virtually focussed on one single thing here, which is worrisome and heartbreaking and frightening. [livejournal.com profile] winchesterxgirl, I'm so glad to hear your brother is okay. You guys must have been beside yourselves with worry. He's a real hero.

It's just staring to rain, here. I hope it lasts a week!

ETA @ 5pm: Rain is on and off, never really wetting anything. Family and friends in Kilmore, Bendigo, Horsham and Kinglake have all checked in, all okay. My mates in Kilmore said that lots of their friends and neighbours ahve lost their homes. Death toll is up, some places say 36, some say 49.
